Beijing to lower emergency response

BEIJING — Beijing will lower its emergency response to COVID-19 from level II to III starting Monday, announced an official of the Beijing municipal government at a press conference Sunday.

The city has effectively contained the spread of the virus after taking the most decisive, resolute and strict measures to control the source of infections at the very beginning, obstruct infection channels and beef up the prevention and control network, said Chen Bei, deputy secretary-general of the Beijing municipal government.

DHAKA — Bangladesh reported 2,459 new COVID-19 cases and 37 more deaths on Sunday, taking the total to 204,525 and the death toll to 2,618, Senior Health Ministry official Nasima Sultana said in a briefing Sunday afternoon.

According to the official, 10,625 samples were tested in the last 24 hours in labs across the country.

JAKARTA — The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 1,639 within one day to 86,521, with the death toll adding by 127 to 4,143, Achmad Yurianto, a health ministry official, said at a press conference here on Sunday.

According to him, 2,133 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 45,401.

HONG KONG — Hong Kong on Sunday announced new anti-epidemic measures, including mandatory face mask wearing in all indoor public places, as daily confirmed cases for the first time surpassed 100 since the COVID-19 outbreak.

The move came a few days after the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government tightened control measures in the face of a worsening epidemic situation.

NEW DELHI — India’s federal health ministry Sunday morning said 543 new deaths due to COVID-19 and 38,902 more cases were reported during the past 24 hours across the country, taking the number of deaths to 26,816 and total cases to 1,077,618.

This is the highest single-day spike in terms of new COVID-19 cases in the country so far.

MANILA — The number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surged to 67,456 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 2,241 new cases on Sunday.

The DOH said that the number of recoveries further rose to 22,465 after 398 more patients have survived the disease.

KABUL — Afghanistan on Sunday reported 174 newly-confirmed COVID-19 cases, taking the country’s total to 35,463, the country’s Ministry of Public Health said.

Within the past 24 hours, 633 tests were conducted, and 174 were positive COVID-19 cases in 16 out of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces, the ministry said in a statement.

WELLINGTON — New Zealand reported three new cases of COVID-19 in managed isolation in New Zealand on Sunday, said New Zealand Ministry of Health in a statement.

Two of Sunday’s cases were in managed isolation in Waikato and the third in Christchurch, it said.
